Communication break-down?

Why do you think people use writing as a tool, rather than verbal communication?

  1. I think that people write people down instead of saying what they want to say face to face because they feel as though it is easier. When you say something to someone, you are put on the spot. Whereas, when you write it, you can re-write it a hundred times before it's perfect. Also, I think that when you write something there's a part of you that feels less accountable for what you've said. Yes, the person's reaction will not be directly received, and therefore people often say things they wouldn't face to face. However, writing something down and giving it to someone is less direct than saying it to someone, and I think people like writing things down because of this. Additionally, writing things down can be a very effective way of organizing one's thoughts. Whereas, verbally expressing yourself can lead to an overwhelming of emotion and render the person speechless.

  2. Hiding behind a screen has become a common way for people to voice opinions they are not strong enough to say out loud. People feel that typing something instead of speaking it makes it "less-harsh." For example, cyber bullying has become a common way bullies hurt others feelings. They are too weak to go over to the person they are bullying and say something to their face, so they instead type or write their harmful words. Robbie writes the vulgar letter, but he would never speak those words to Cecelia's face. People can use writing as a tool to output their feelings without ever having to speak to someone.

  3. Telling information, especially when it is person, is hard to share directly with others. In certain situations, it is hard to verbally express ones feelings. By writing down thoughts, a person is able to express their emotions in a person and distinctive way that can not always be said through words. Most people write differently than they speak; writing can be more formal or done with more description. In the novel Atonement, Briony soon realizes that it is easier for her to write stories that write plays. She has a chance to express her thoughts on paper which gives her more freedom for expression.

  4. For a lot of people, confrontation presents itself as a very uncomfortable situation. For Robbie, he felt what he had to say would be much easier written down rather than said aloud. Writing things down gives people the opportunity to read, react, and then respond. This is opposed to hearing and having to respond automatically. I think writing is easier also because it isn't as hard to chicken out of. For example, if I want to confront someone and declare my undevoting love for them, most likely.....I'll chicken out. However if I type up a paragraph or two declaring my undevoting love for them, it makes it much less scary to hand off because you don't have to see or hear their immediate response.

  5. In Atonement, Robbie writes a sexually explicit letter to Cecelia using language he would never say out loud. Although the letter he wrote was the incorrect draft, the actions of writing down these words on paper gave him an outlet for his sexual frustration. Today people use the internet to anonymously write things that they would never want their name attached to. Writing things down give you the option of expressing yourself in a way that may be difficult said out loud.

  6. Voicing an opinion can be complicated and sometimes difficult. By writing that opinion or message down, it eliminates any awkward tension by talking to face to face. For Robbie, he feels nervous and embarrassed about what he has to say to Cecilia. He feels more confident to write what he has to say down than to talking to her in person. In my life, I have definitely related to this issue. For example, what you want to talk to someone about an issue, it is much easier to write them a message then talk to them verbally. Although verbal communication may be more difficult, it is a more effective way to get your point across.

  7. Sometimes, it is impossible to say what we think or feel out loud. Writing the words on paper provides a degree of separation between you and the other person. In sixth grade, I passed a note to a boy I liked because I was too afraid to ask him out in person. Unfortunately, he handed the note back to me. In retrospect, it would have been better to face him myself…but oh well. I don’t blame Robbie for making Briony the middleman. However, he probably should have double-checked the envelope!

  8. A letter or an e-mail or a text is much less personal than talking. There have been studies that have shown that people who text something to a someone wouldn't say it to them in person. This also might be because they don't want to deal with/see their initial reaction. Nor do they want to get the harsh blame for it. Through text it is harder to know a person's true feeling and emotion and a response can be taken in many ways. While in person emotions are more significant and clear. Robbie would never say to Cecilia face to face what he said in his letter because it would be more embarrassing and in some ways more personal. Writing it down and then giving it to her is like having someone (or something) tell his feelings for him.

  9. For some people writing is an easier way to communicate with people. It can be a way of expressing their feelings without having confrontation. Also some people aren’t able to have verbal conversations and writing is their way of communications. I know that when I am writing, it is easier for me to express my emotions and feeling towards something. When I send text messages to friends I am able to talk about certain things that I might not be able to say to their face; it can be a way for me to avoid confrontation or be a way for me to get my message across.

  10. People use writing as a tool because it's easier than verbal communication. Numerous people have a fear of confronting people and expressing their true opinions. Having one person present when their true feelings are being relieved is easier then having another person be present when revealing their true thoughts. For example, if one person is expressing their thoughts in a letter or journal they are the only one present that is witnessing their feelings. When one is confronting another person or telling them in person their thoughts are revealed in public. Therefore, there thoughts are out there allowing another individual to either accept their opinion or be against it. People also have this fear of being judged by others or having their image tarnished. This is a common fear amongst people which is not good because people have a fear of truly expressing themselves. It's easier said then done but if someone feels a certain way they should express it in order to eliminate any miscommunications or misunderstandings.

  11. think that people generally don't like confrontation so they resort to other means. To avoid confrontation, people write note or send texts because it is easier to speak your mind when no one is standing in front of you, you don't have to deal with the repercussions of what you said. It takes a lot more brutal honesty and guts to tell someone something, especially if its embarrassing or mean, if it is in person. It is a cowardly way to confront someone because it has not always been this way. I feel like people are losing the ability to confront and the ability to deal with people you may not like or have a problem with because they are resorting to other means to tell them how they feel.
In terms of Robbie, he is worried that he will be shut down by Cecilia so he sends the note instead, However, if he had just balled up and told Cecelia he was sorry in person, the not never would have been mixed up, they never would had sex, and Briony never would have walked in on them and created the drama.

  12. Writing is a measure used to avoid confrontation. Its simple as that. Confrontation requires the bravery to say what you really mean, and the preparation to respond to the person's reaction positive or negative. In the example of Robbie and Cecilia, Robbie easily wrote down his thoughts of Cecilia and what he wanted to do with her because he was writing in private with the intention of immediately discarding the note. However, he would never have been so abrupt in person, rightfully so. Premarital sex was so frowned upon in England in 1935 that Robbie would have been shunned and even fired if caught just writing the note, without actually committing the act. Additionally, Robbie is the son of Cecilia's family's housekeeper. He belongs to a lower class and is expected to know his place in society. Robbie is bold for just thinking about Cecilia in a romantic way because relationships between people of different social classes were almost nonexistent.

  13. I think people use writing as a tool because it is a great way to express feelings and change reality. Writing a story for instance can change your reality so much because you are in complete control of everything that happens. Writing helps expression because you are free and everything is between you and the paper. A reaction is not a worry. I am a very verbal person, but some other people prefer hiding behind a screen to feel empowered. To each its own. Robbie could not express his feelings in person because of the possibility of rejection. When something is written you cannot see the expression on someones face, and he probably would have frozen up. Briony writes plays to have a sense of control on everything. She uses writing as an outlet because she knows with out it her voice is not as strong.

  14. People like to send 'sensitive' topics via letter because it offers them a facade to hide behind. There is something less intimate about a letter than while talking to someone. Would you go up to an enemy and tell them how much you hate them, to their face, probably not. But via letter or text, what are they going to do to, the space between offers a lack of attachment and threat of bodily harm. Its a similar effect like texting vs. calling. If you want to break up with someone, it is much easier to just send a text rather than to have to listen to the rage through the headset. Robby uses his letter the same way. He is far too afraid to say anything that hints that he like Cee, yet once he is writing on paper he becomes audacious enough to write his fantasies. Knowing that when she reads it, she will have time to cool down form the letter, and less likely to throw a hissy fit on him. Less involvement means less punishment.

  15. I think that people use writing as a tool because it is a different form of communication. Each person in the world interprets a form of communication differently. Some people are good listeners and can hear people talk for hours and understand every word. Others interpret communication through visual representations such as drawing or videos. I think that writing is one of these forms, a medium used to communicate to others. Yet, the thing about writing is that it can get very complex and therefore making people confused and dislike reading writing that is complex. I also think that writing kind of hides the true and audio meaning. Like if someone was to write a swear to someone it would not be filled with such emotion if someone were to yell it at someone.

  16. I think people find using writing as a more effective source of communication. Under certain circumstances people need to be able to write what they’re thinking without someone else around. Sometimes seeing the person you want to communicate with can make a person freeze up and decide not to say what’s on their mind. Writing can often give people the courage to speak up without something getting in their way. Whether you’re taking a picture, painting a scene, or writing about your feelings, each method is a way for someone to speak in a nonverbal way. Different art forms are there to give people the tools they need to communicate without talking. In the case of Atonement, Robbies letter to Cecilia gives him the chance to tell her what he is thinking without worrying about what she might think if he said it face to face. Robbie was able to gain courage through not having to verbally say what was on his mind.
